Medical Marketing Strategist

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Planning, and collaborating closely with other members of the Copywriting & Strategy team, the Medical Marketing Strategist is responsible for understanding, interpreting, and synthesizing scientific, clinical, and medical information. The Medical Marketing Strategist serves as a crucial link between creative and content strategies. They guide the Medical Copywriting Team and the Creative Team in crafting various types of campaigns (promotional, educational, scientific) for healthcare professionals, patients, and consumers. Additionally, they work closely with the Client Services Team to advise clients on the best strategies for their brands. They play a pivotal strategic role in developing advertising campaigns and understanding business challenges to effectively advise clients.
Skills
- Excellent medical marketing strategy skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, leadership, and persuasion
- Strong creativity, curiosity, and an interest in keeping up with the latest industry trends
- English: exceptional writing and speaking skills (English-speaking clientele). French (writing and/or speaking) is also required for internal discussion
- Ability to conduct good research and support strategic reasoning
- Openness to feedback and flexibility
- Deep understanding of health and wellness topics, marketing principles, and digital marketing tools
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to moderate a group of strong individuals
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years in a marketing/advertising agency, with a considerable amount of experience in strategy
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Marketing or any related discipline. Sciences-related (MSc, PhD, PharmD, or MD in Medical/Life Sciences) degree is also a plus
- Experience working with pharmaceutical clients
- Experience working with Copywriters and Creative Teams
- Knowledge and application of PAAB Code and Advertising Standards Canada (ASC) Code
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Experience speaking to consumer audiences for Canadian clients
- Mastery of MS Office suite software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Main Responsibilities
Strategic Analysis and Research
- Engage in strategic thinking regarding client requests and needs
- Write clear, compelling, and effective briefs for the Creative and Copywriting Teams
- Conduct in-depth research on health-related topics, staying up to date with industry trends and advancements to produce accurate and relevant content. Research and synthesize consumer/healthcare professional behaviours, cultural trends, competition, and industry trends and benchmarks into challenges and insights capable of unlocking transformative strategies and ideas
- Analyze the state of account situations (market, product characteristics, demographics and target audience, points of differentiation, competition, issues) as well as conduct a SWOT analysis
- Understand the various regulations within the pharmaceutical industry (e.g. PAAB, ASC, FDA)
Developing Tactics and Communication Strategies
- Find solutions to identified issues, clarify, and enhance the client's communication objectives
- Establish 360-degree tactical plans, strategy guidelines, positioning statements, and communication axes (key messages)
- Participate in brainstorming sessions with the Creative, Client Services, and Copywriting Teams and the generation of tactics
- Ensure the consistency of tactics and promotional axes developed across their iterations between Teams
- Participate in the development of the medical content of presentations for advisory committees based on business objectives and facilitate discussions with participating physicians and other health professionals (when needed)
- Structure and write the strategic rationale in client presentation format
- Organize and lead ideation sessions (internally and with clients)
- Participate in brand planning development with clients (as needed)
Client Relationship and Business Development
- Actively participate in client meetings and effectively represent scientific work to clients
- Develop and maintain excellent client relationships, especially on the medical side, and earn the trust and respect of client counterparts
- Ensure medical downloads for broader Teams on the science and marketing of products for new business pitches are at the right level and productive
- Engage with clients to determine strategy and deliverables for upcoming sales meetings
- Work with Client Services to develop tactical proposals and brand plans for clients’ upcoming fiscal year
- Support growth for existing agency accounts with medical offerings
- Participate in RFP preparation as needed
- Review and ensure the medical section of new business presentations meet or exceed agency standards
Mentoring, Content Review, and Collaboration
- Review content from a medical/scientific/strategic perspective
- Mentor, guide, and challenge Medical Copywriters and Artistic Directors in terms of ways to present/digest content; refine and grow concepts; propose innovative ideas
- Constantly push for excellence in project development and the achievement of clients’ objectives
- Pay close attention to detail to avoid scientific mistakes
- Share best practices with colleagues
